Replacement design for embedded systems - methods to avoid production discontinuation risks while maintaining quality and mass production capability.
The customer faced a situation where the LED they were using was discontinued, making it impossible to procure the necessary components for the existing products. They could not change the size or shape of the circuit board to fit the existing housing, and it was essential to maintain specifications such as LED brightness, emission patterns, and color. While continuing the mass production system, there was an urgent need for the introduction of alternative products to maintain the current product quality. Our company carefully selected alternative LED components with equivalent circuit board sizes and pin configurations, implementing a design replacement that minimized changes to the existing circuit board pattern. After confirming with the customer that the specifications of the LED remained the same through prototype circuit boards, we transitioned to mass production of the final product. This resolved the component procurement risk, achieved a stable production system and quality maintenance, and further reduced overall costs. We encourage design engineers and procurement and production management teams to consider our case as a reference for measures aimed at ensuring stable supply and improving product quality.
